Conversations With The White Wolf
New Night
The Dreamer had resolved himself by this night to not allow himself to dream any of the previous dreams again. If the Dreamer had to wake himself up every minute throughout the night he would do so, to keep from going through these escapades again.
The Dreamer lay in bed for quite sometime, unable to sleep. As he lay there he drifted not into sleep, but into darkness. He knew that he was still awake, yet he was not focused only on current time and place.
The Dreamer saw himself walking through a semi-arid plain with some companions. One, the one in front of him was a Native American man, then came the Dreamer, then came the Dreamer's ally, and then someone else, whom the Dreamer does not recognize.
As they walked they can to the side of a hill, not unlike the side of the washouts of the previous dreams, but made of dirt and gravel, bordering the plain. Up the side of the hill was a trail that was well traveled and easily climbed. On top the side of the hill the trail would again be flat and easily traveled.
Just before they reached the side of the hill a wolf appeared to the Dreamer's left. The wolf was gray and looked somewhat hungry, but not an immediate danger to any of the men.
As they stood there looking at the wolf, he was looking directly at the Dreamer. The one who was in front of the Dreamer came to his side and told the Dreamer to speak to the wolf. He is a Great Spirit.
The Dreamer thought that this would be a dumb idea, but since it was his dream and he could go for it, he went for it. The following conversation ensued.
Dreamer "Are you here to speak with me?"
Wolf He just looked at the Dreamer. He felt foolish.
Dreamer "Are you here to make a fool out of me?"
(no response)
"Are you here to follow us?"
(no response)
"Are you here to lead us?"
(no response)
"Are you here to eat us?"
(no response)
Wolf "I am here to give you a message, if you will hear me."
Dreamer The Dreamer looked around at the faces of the others and they looked astonished - but none of them spoke. He didn't know if the others hear the wolf or not or, if they were shocked to hear the Dreamer carrying on a conversation with a wolf - and the Dreamer's believing he heard what they could not. The Dreamer thought "what the hell" and continued on.
"I will hear you."
Wolf "What you have seen is true."
Dreamer "What do you mean - that my dreams are true in their course or that they are true in their symbolism and spirit of the telling?"
Wolf "They are quite true in their course, but you must be free to follow what you spirit tells you here."
Dreamer "You mean that the essence of the dreams are true but that some of the particulars may be different?"
Wolf "What I am saying, if you would hear me, is that your dreams were not dreams but visions. Visions are symbolic and factual. Only those with discerning spirits are able to see the truth in the visitations. Only those with true spirits will have the courage to change what they have seen and see what they feel."
Dreamer The Dreamer doesn't say anything for a minute - just looks into this creature's face.
"Are you saying to me then that we will find what we are searching for if we are looking with the proper motives?"
Wolf "No!" "What I am saying is that you will find your treasure if you will look with your spirit and not with you mind. You must take each turn as it seems right to you - be led, do not lead."
Dreamer "Will you come with us?"
Wolf "I will be with you but you will see me not."
Dreamer "Am I then to take this visitation from you as confirmation of the things I have seen in the dreams?"
Wolf "Yes."
Dreamer "Tell me please, how do take all of the dreams and make them fit together, how can I put this puzzle together?"
Wolf "Prepare yourself as if all the visions were the same one. Each danger, each fear, each apprehension shall be either all or part in your true journey."
"Most importantly, you must show no fear."
Dreamer "But some of the things that happened were frightening - paralyzing!"
Wolf "Yes, but show no fear. You may feel trembling in you heart, but show no fear."
"Prepare as though each instance was of the real world. Know that spirits are only harmful to those who fear them. They have no power to those who have a spirit that lives within them."
Dreamer "Will you come with me then?"
Wolf "I am with you even when you do not see me. Sometimes I come to you as I am now, other times I come to you differently. Always look for me and you will find me. Do not be concerned if you do not recognize me for I will recognize you."
"I must go now, but remember, show no fear."
He turned and ran back into the shrubs.
The others spoke incessantly but the Dreamer could not hear them. All the Dreamer could do was see their mouths moving, them gesture wildly, and scurry around one another as if they had seen a leprechaun.
We continued up the side of the hill and along the path.
We came to a fork in the trail where both lead downwards very sharply - very steeply.
The Dreamer felt that we should go to the right, but everyone else insisted that they go to the left. The Dreamer lets them go ahead as he stood near a tree at the head of the trail.
They got no further down that about ten feet when the trail fell off like the side of a cliff. There seemed to be no bottom. If they fell they would surely be lost.
The Dreamer climbed down that trail holding onto the bushes and limbs from the underbrush next to it. When he got to the place they were hanging, he could see that the trail was nearly vertical and that still - any or all of them could perish.
Somehow, the Dreamer helped the group back to the top of the tra
