Your fathers generation has been called "generation X". The "X" means "nothing".
Before them was the Baby-Boomers, then the Hippie, then the Yippee and then the X'rs. It means that they have not gotten or accepted a specific identity.
The Baby-boomers were the generation following the second world war. After the troops came home their was a "baby boom".
The Hippies were the "drug, sex and rock and rollers of the 60's.
Then the Yippies were the money makers and then the X'rs who did nothing but sit around and play Nintendo and complain about being bored.
